What is e prescribing, and how does Surescripts work?
E prescribing is the electronic creation, transmission, and management of prescriptions between prescribers and pharmacies. In the U.S. it runs on the NCPDP SCRIPT standard and is routed through the Surescripts network, which connects nearly every prescriber, pharmacy, and pharmacy benefit manager. Surescripts carries new prescriptions, renewals, cancellations, electronic prior authorization (ePA), real time prescription benefit (RTPB), and medication history: so a prescriber sees eligibility, formulary, and drug cost at the point of care and the pharmacy receives a structured, error resistant order.

What is the NCPDP SCRIPT standard?
NCPDP SCRIPT is the national standard for electronic prescription messaging in the U.S.: new prescriptions, renewals, changes, cancellations, prior authorization, and medication history. It's the language the Surescripts network speaks, so any e prescribing integration is fundamentally an NCPDP SCRIPT integration.
What is real time prescription benefit (RTPB)?
RTPB delivers patient specific drug pricing and coverage to the prescriber at the point of care: what the patient will actually pay, whether it's on formulary, and lower cost or therapeutically equivalent alternatives. It replaces guesswork and post visit surprises with a real number before the prescription is sent.
How does RxNorm map to NDC?
RxNorm is the normalized clinical drug vocabulary (ingredient, strength, dose form); NDC (National Drug Code) identifies the specific manufactured, packaged product. One RxNorm concept usually maps to many NDCs, so clinical logic (interactions, formulary) lives at the RxNorm level while dispensing and billing happen at the NDC level. We model that hierarchy natively so everything resolves to one canonical drug entity.
